Kota: Kota Consumer Protection Court has taken serious note of a complaint against Bollywood actor Salman Khan and the Rajshree Pan Masala company. The complaint alleges the brand’s advertisement is misleading because it claims the product contains real saffron.
The court has issued notices to both the actor and the company, asking them to explain their stand by November 27. This case has now drawn attention nationwide as it involves a celebrity endorsement and consumer rights.
The complaint was filed by senior BJP leader and Rajasthan High Court advocate Inder Mohan Singh Honey. He stated that Rajshree Pan Masala is deceiving consumers by saying that its five-rupee pouch contains saffron. He pointed out that saffron is an expensive spice costing nearly four lakh rupees per kilogram. Therefore, it is impossible for any company to include real saffron in such a cheap pouch without misleading the public.
Lawyer Ripudaman Singh, representing the complainant, said both Salman Khan and the company were equally responsible for misleading consumers. He emphasized that the advertisement promotes harmful products among youth, creating false glamour around pan masala and tobacco. The complaint also warned that such ads can increase the risk of serious diseases like cancer and lung infections among regular users.
After reviewing the complaint and initial evidence, the court issued a formal notice to Salman Khan and the company. They must respond by November 27 with their written statement. The court observed that false advertising can mislead consumers and harm public health. The move has sent a strong message to advertising agencies and brand ambassadors that accountability is essential when endorsing such products.
Experts say pan masala often contains ingredients harmful to the mouth, liver, and stomach. The use of celebrities in advertising these products can make them appear stylish or harmless, especially to the younger generation. The complaint insists that such misleading endorsements indirectly encourage addiction and poor health habits. It also highlights that saffron, being a luxury ingredient, is often used as a marketing trick to attract buyers.
The complainant demanded that all advertisements of such harmful products should be stopped immediately. He also urged the government to revoke Salman Khan’s national awards for misleading the public for profit. According to him, it is unethical for an influential celebrity to promote products that can harm health and misguide millions of fans across the country.
The case is now being widely discussed across India, with debates on celebrity accountability in advertising. The court’s next hearing will be crucial in deciding whether the ad violated consumer protection laws. If found guilty, the company could face heavy penalties, and the actor might face legal consequences. The final verdict could set a precedent for future celebrity endorsements and consumer rights awareness.
